Bipolar and Schizophrenia Study for Teens

Study Specific Details:
- This is a multicenter, open-label study to evaluate safety and tolerability of Fanapt in adolescents with bipolar or schizophrenia. Dr. Handal can find out what medication/dose the participant is taking in case of an emergency.
- This is a 12-month trial.
- Do not need to fast at the initial appointment for lab work.
- Participant are reimbursed $75 for their time and travel at the end of each completed visit.

- Exclusion
- Male or Female, ages 13-17.
- Subject meets DSM-5 criteria for bipolar I or schizophrenia.
- Patients in need of an antipsychotic medication.
- Must be able to ingest oral medication.
- Not suffering from an acute exacerbation of their psychosis or be hospitalized within the past 2 months.
- IQ is less than 70.
- Imminent risk of injury to self.
- Current or lifetime history of suicidal behavior.
- Patients with a known or suspected history of seizure disorder or neuroleptic malignant syndrome, encephalopathic syndrome, or tardive dyskinesia.
- History of significant brain trauma, closed head injury involving loss of consciousness or a coma lasting more than 24 hours.
- Diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, brief psychotic disorder, or psychotic disorder due to another medication.
- History of immunodeficiency.
- History of unexplained syncope.
- Autonomic dysfunction, such as fainting, palpitations within the last 3 years.
- Drug abuse in the past 6 months.
